Many of the record shops I've visited hover the years have meant different things to me.
The old "Other Record Shop" on the High Street in Edinburgh was where I first bought the "Hatful of Hollow" album. Had to return it three times mind!
I also spent a lot in Ripping Records, FOPP and Virgin (before it became a Megastore or whatever they call it. I went in one day and asked if they had any Josef K records. Turns out that had loads of the Postcard stuff and I bought it all for £1.10 each) but my favourite has to be Avalanche. Knowledgeable, friendly staff, especially Kevin (who owns it I think) and Andrew (lead singer of Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes). I wonder if they'll sponsor the site!!
Outside the capital I liked Missing, which is now...missing! I love Amoeba in San Francisco (it's too big). I also like bookshop in Glasgow where Stephen Pastel. The name escapes me (Smiths?) but you always got interesting stuff in there. _________________ www.jocknroll.co.uk - The Great Jock 'n' Roll Album - Have You Voted? |

I used to live above the Avalanche in Lady lawson Street in Edinburgh and it was sorely tempting every morning to look in their window. Often gave into temptation it must be said
Oh and TC missed out the Rough Trade shop in London. FANBOY HEAVEN! |

Always loved the independent stores - Bruce's and Listen were the Glasgow's best in the late 60's, although I believe Bruce's started in Edinburgh. Having moved to Devon in the 70s, I lost touch a bit with good music. However, in the last 10 or 15 years I've been trawling the shops in Glasgow on family trips, usually ending up at Fopp - best shop in the world. I've bought so much from them in the last few years, and because they had/have so much cheap stuff it's worth buying something just because it looked interesting - and I've got into an awful lot of new music as a result. So impressed that Fopp has re=opened and it seems to have the same old flavour as well.
Oh, and I also used to go to Missing in Glasgow as well [both shops]. |

Late 80s/early 90s: I always used love doing a great big round trip of Edinburgh's record stores. Vinyl Villains, Bandparts, Fopp (old south side of Cockburn St branch), Avalanche (W Nicholson St), that one at the top of Morrison Street (where Sainsbury's is now), the one at the bottom of Morrison Street (was it Record Shack?), Hot Wax (Dalry), Oldies Museum (Haymarket) etc etc etc.
At the time, Vinyl Villains was my favourite. These days it's Fopp (HMV ownership or not).
Used to love Sleeves in Kirkcaldy. _________________ Feeding on my knowledge like a cake. The smell of truth as I bake. |
