The current Top 10 is as follows:

Top 10 Worst Jock ‘n’ Roll Single (@ 9 Oct)

1. Wet Wet Wet—Love Is All Around*
2. Andy Cameron—Ally’s Tartan Army
3. Sandi Thom—I Was A Punk Rocker
4. Andy Stewart (with the Michael Sammes Singers)—Donald, Where’s Your Troosers
5. Kelly Marie—Feels Like I’m In Love*
6. Scotland World Cup Squad—We Have A Dream
7. Neil Reid—Mother of Mine
8. Del Amitri—Nothing Ever Happens*
9. The Krankies—Fan’dabi’dozi*
10. Deacon Blue—Dignity*

* Has received at least one vote in the Best AND Worst Single categories (The Krankies culprit has already been named and shamed on the Pop Pourri page)

Jim Dickson emailed Jock ’n’ Roll HQ to query whether we made bad singles. We still think the good far outnumber the bad but get a load of some of these in our Top 10.

The Wets came out of the traps on this one like racing snakes but slowly and surely both Andy Cameron’s tribute to the pill-popping, poodle-headed underachievers of 1978 and the little Ms Internet “scam” are catching up fast. Nice to see Kelly Marie’s synth drum aberration in there too. Boo- Boo. Boo- Boo.

No sign of Lena Martell yet but surely it’s a matter of time, well one day at a time to be precise. Oh and respect to Brian McShane who wanted ‘anything by Sheena Easton’: Not an eligible vote Brian but a fine sentiment nonetheless!

I didn't vote for a worst single, as I don't bother to memorize and/or learn most bad songs. Other than Ice Ice Baby...there was no escaping that, back in the day. And he's not a Scottsman.

Or is he? (we're a mixed bag on this continent....)

Hi Giselle,

I knew there was something else I meant to say. It's "Scotsman" and they speak "Scots"...therefore it's only one T but if they're "Scottish" then it's two Ts.

What was it someone once said about two countries separated by the same language?

If anything the Worst Scottish Single category is harder because you have a nuumber of criteria to look at.

(a) Is it a song that irritates you everytime you hear it?
(b) Is it a novelty hit?
(c) Is it a song by a band you hate?

I went for Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around" for two reasons. It was number 1 in the UK for absolutely ages and, two, they ruined what was a great Troggs track.

From our secret industry-only midweek chart, I think there might be a few challengers to Wet Wet Wet's dominance of this category.

Andy Stewart seems to have ruffled a few feathers and Sandi Thom, whether it's for the song or the way she was "discovered" (or both), are also fast approaching the medal positions.

Watch this space...the new chart is out on Monday afternoon.

I feel poor Sandi gets uncalled for grief, whichever way she was "discovered", if this was Alanis Morissette or Tori Amos or someone else of that ilk singing "Punk Rocker" it would be a great song, she's Scottish for gods sake give her a break. As for Dignity ,could possibly be described as annoying but not a bad song, for annoying don,t get me started on 500 miles.Could be worse you could be like me sitting in an office in a Kazakhstan oilfield listening to Roxette singing "Everything I do" or some long haired Russian sex god singing bad karaoke.Luckily the one cd that was made for me before I left includes Paisleys finest Paolo,U2,Jimmy Barnes,Joe Cocker,Matalie Merchant, and good old Deacon Blue and I know some of these aren't Scottish.Take care keep discussing Mick Maguire.

If Sandi's "career" has any sort of longevity then no-one will remember how she came to our attention. I suspect the over-exposure to "Punk Rocker" has swayed many people voting because it's so current and still in their heads.

The beauty of music is that it's all about the opinions and everyone is entitled to theirs, whether they like Westlife or the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band.

Kazakhstan? Wow. What on earth takes you there, if you don't mind me asking?

We look forward to the votes of the Kazakhstan jury led by you Mick!

Cheers

The Worst Jock ‘n’ Roll Single

Ah, the Hall of Shame. A mixture of songs which’ll annoy y’all for some reason and the scientifically proven pish. The Top 3 are so far ahead of the rest it hurts. Marti and the boys are still holding their own though Wets fans should vote for the only artists definitely on drugs (FIFA tests available on request) when they recorded it at number 2 (well, we know one of them was). Travis’ only entry in the main chart seems to annoy almost as many people as those who love it. One Andy Stewart track is replaced by another and it’s a bad week for anyone called Reid as Craig and Charlie have TWO new entries in the Worst Top 10 and Neil clings on to the number 10 spot. Where’s his mammy when he needs her?

Top 10 Worst Jock ‘n’ Roll Single (@ 24 Oct)

On the Sandi Thom thing - it seems to me that the most annoying thing for most people on this forum will be the Lyric about being a punk rocker with flowers in her hair - at which point who did not when they first heard it shout 'What type of F****** Punk Rocker had flowers in their hair?'

Definitely annoying but only minor league compared to some.

Can the Wets keep the same stranglehold on the Worst chart as they did to the main chart in 1993? Another bad week if you’re called Reid and both Annie Lennox and the Kane brothers make their first appearances. And a little plea from the Stats Bunker; please vote in the Worst category too. Some of you are still too polite to say.

Over half of the current Worst Top 10 has votes in the Best Single category too but if anyone votes for “Scottish Soldier” in the Best category we’ll send The Cat round to sort you out. Be warned: he’s a big lad!

Dave, Stats Bunker.

The Worst Jock ‘n’ Roll Single

Well folks, is there no shifting Marti and the boys. Sandi is on the march and may make it yet. Neil Reid got another late vote just as polls were closing to push him even further up and don’t rule out Kelly Marie, the unthinking person’s Sandi Thom.

Interestingly enough the B side of Andy Cameron’s celebration of forthcoming footballing disaster is called “I Want To Be A Punk Rocker”. Both Andy Cameron and the wets are Rangers fans. Are we seeing patterns here? Is the hypothetical Worst Scottish single a version of a song called “Punk Rocker” by Barry Ferguson and Donald Finlay (on the flute of course) with “Islands In The Steam” on the B-side?

Memo to The Cat: I won’t eat that cheese in the corner of the Stats Bunker before bed ever again!

Dave, Stats Bunker
